The sand gets stuck and stops along the way, so you either have to turn or shake it a bit to get it going again. If you want an hourglass with a portion of sand permanently in the upper half, it is a fine decorative object. I have given it 2 stars as I believe that an hourglass that does not function as an hourglass definitely qualifies as something missing.
